Dr. Robert Lustig believes sugar is a toxin.  He’s been a lone voice on the topic, until now. On Sunday, April 1, 2012, the CBS news show 60 Minutes aired a segment titled “Is Sugar Toxic?” about the serious toll that sugar takes on our health.  It was no April Fool’s joke – new research coming out of some our country’s most respected institutions is showing that refined sugar consumption (including high fructose corn syrup) is linked to heart disease and cancer, and that it is as powerfully addictive as cocaine – quite possibly one of the most addictive substances available.

Nearly every scientist they interviewed for the segment said they are eliminating sugar from their diets, based on the compelling and undeniable health impacts. Not surprisingly, the only person interviewed who didn’t show concern was the guy who serves on the board of the Sugar Association.  He tried to defend sugar by relying on the standard line that “people need to reduce calories and exercise more.” As the evidence continues to mount in favor of the toxicity of sugar, that antiquated argument gets weaker by the minute.  As Dr. Lustig and the other scientists point out, calories from refined sugars are very different from the calories in fruit and other natural whole foods.  Cutting out sugar and processed foods is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

To gain an appreciation of just what sugar does to your body, I encourage you to watch the 14-minute segment in its entirety.  You can also learn more by checking out one other article I’ve written about the health effects of sugar: Sugar: The Bitter Truth.
