How to Decode Food Labels PDF Print E-mail
Monday, June 08, 2009

In my new book, Plan-D, I detail the importance of reading ingredient lists and help you navigate the grocery store to learn how to live processed-free in a processed-food world.

When you shop for food, you should not be particularly interested in whether or not the product is labeled "low-fat", "low-cholesterol," or "sugar-free." And don't give those wholesome claims of "Heart Healthy," and "Trans-Fat Free," on the front of packages a second glance. Bypass the Nutrition Fact Panel also. Instead, you should be scanning the package for only one thing: the ingredient list.

GMOs: What are they and what are their effects?

In 1996, the first Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) entered our food supply. Today, genetically modified ingredients are found in 70 percent of our foods. Is it a coincidence, or a direct correlation, that in the nine years since the use of GMOs became commonplace, the number of Americans suffering from three or more chronic diseases nearly doubled from 7 percent to thirteen percent. Have GMOs been contributing to the dramatic rise of obesity, diabetes, asthma, allergies, and other food-related illnesses?

Environmental organizations and public interest groups have been actively protesting against Genetically Modified (GM) foods for years. The results of the few studies that have been conducted have raised grave concerns about the health effects of genetically modified crops on animals, insects, and humans.

How To Stock a Healthy Pantry PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dee McCaffrey, CDC
Friday, May 08, 2009
Question to Dee: "Dee, you say the pantry needs to be filled with foods that are as close to nature as possible. Does this mean that there aren't any good foods in the canned, boxed, bagged or frozen-food aisles?"

Dee's Answer:

No, it just means they're few and far between. Things like frozen blueberries or canned black beans can still be good for you, as long as they don't contain a bunch of unhealthy and unnecessary ingredients. My nutritional philosophy is, "If it has a label, don't eat it."

That said, I realize that's not always realistic for all of us all of the time. We like to have convenience foods to help us deal with our time crunches, and that's OK. But I recommend that you read the labels. Choose packaged foods made with real-food ingredients over those with factory-created components.

Be a smart consumer and look for things that are going to help your body thrive. When you pick something up, ask yourself the question: "Is this something my great grandmother would have eaten?" If the answer is "no," you should probably put it back.

Real Butter is Best PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dee McCaffrey, CDC

Are you afraid to eat butter? You shouldn't be, but you need to be aware of which type of butter is the best.

I am often asked whether the new trans-fat free margarines should be eaten instead of real butter. My question back is, "why do you want to avoid butter?" Butter is a time honored traditional food that has been consumed for thousands of years in cultures all over the world. Butter got a bad rap when it became a victim of something I call the Big Fat Lies (you can read more about the Big Fat Lies in my new book Plan-D: The Amazing Anti-Diet That Will Change Your Life Forever). Along with its close cousin coconut oil, butter was labeled as an "artery clogging" saturated fat, and we were told to avoid it like the plague. However, real butter made from the cream of grass-fed cows is an extremely healthy food brimming with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids that are essential for maintaining good health.
